This photo, from 1951, captures the essence of the ecstasy of a true saxual healing. Check out those dudes in the front row. What a scream! I’ve got to try that - laying on my back and playing.
That’s one of my missions in life: the inspire that kind of feeling.
I’m in the studio this week producing a CD for my good friend, Simrit Kaur. She’s a singer, composer and harmonium player here in Nevada City and performs a style of music that is along the lines of Snatum Kaur and Deva Premal, very spiritual, very beautiful and inspirational.
I’ll also be performing sax and flute on this project. I’ll post some of the music from these sessions soon. You’ll love it - she sings like an angel.
In the meantime, Simrit’s band - including your’s truly will be performing Saturday evening - Mar. 29 - here in Nevada City. You can learn more about that event here.
We need more of these in the world don’t you think? Check out those sexy suits. And how often do you see a saxophone that huge (that’s a rare bass saxophone)? Wow!
I just discovered this most interesting, relatively new instrument called the Hang Drum. Beautiful sound. Check out Dante Bucci on the Hang Drum:
Here’s information about “The Hang” from suite101.com: “The Hang, pronounced “hung”, also referred to as a Hang drum, is a relatively new musical instrument. Descended from the steel drum, it resembles a cross between a steel drum, gamelan, and gong. The range of sound it can produce is very wide, sounding like a gong, steel drum, or even vibraphone. Hang means (human) hand in the Bern language. Appropriately enough, it is generally played using the hands, with different sounds created using different parts of the hand. It is also made and tuned by hand in Bern, Switzerland by creators, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer of the PANArt company. At the writing of this article, orders are only being taken on a limited basis and each Hang is unique. Despite these seeming limitations, the Hang is enjoying immense popularity. A recent search on YouTube turned up 226 videos of the Hang. Several fan sites have also grown up around the instrument.”
Apparently, the only way you can get a new one is to write a letter to Felix and Sabina in Bern, and wait for an invitation to visit them in person and buy one. They sell on eBay for $4,000 - 8,000. Wow!
